چکیده

We prove Anderson localization in a disordered photonic crystal waveguide by measuring the ensembleaveraged extinction mean-free path, e, which is controlled by the dispersion in the photon density of states DOS of the photonic crystal waveguide. Except for the very low DOS case, where out-of-plane losses are non-negligible, e can be approximated to be the localization length . The extinction mean-free path shows a fivefold variation between the lowand the high-DOS regime, and it becomes shorter than the sample length thus giving rise to strongly confined modes. The dispersive behavior of e demonstrates the close relation between Anderson localization and the DOS in disordered photonic crystals, which opens a promising route to controlling and exploiting Anderson-localized modes for efficient light confinement.

Two mechanisms of disorder-induced localization in photonic-crystal waveguides

Unintentional but unavoidable fabrication imperfections in state-of-the-art photonic-crystal waveguides lead to the spontaneous formation of Anderson-localized modes thereby limiting slow-light propagation and its potential applications. On the other hand, disorder-induced cavities offer an approach to cavity-quantum electrodynamics and random lasing at the nanoscale. The key statistical parame...

Probing the statistical properties of Anderson localization with quantum emitters

Wave propagation in disordered media can be strongly modified by multiple scattering and wave interference. Ultimately, the so-called Andersonlocalized regime is reached when the waves become strongly confined in space. So far, Anderson localization of light has been probed in transmission experiments by measuring the intensity of an external light source after propagation through a disordered ...

Experimental observation of strong photon localization in disordered photonic crystal waveguides.

We demonstrate experimentally that structural perturbations imposed on highly dispersive photonic crystal-based waveguides give rise to spectral features that bear signatures of Anderson localization. Sharp resonances with effective Q's of over 30 000 are found in scattering spectra of disordered waveguides. The resonances are observed in a approximately 20-nm bandwidth centered at the cutoff o...

Statistical measurements of quantum emitters coupled to Anderson-localized modes in disordered photonic-crystal waveguides.

We present a statistical study of the Purcell enhancement of the light emission from quantum dots coupled to Anderson-localized cavities formed in disordered photonic-crystal waveguides. We measure the time-resolved light emission from both single quantum emitters coupled to Anderson-localized cavities and directly from the cavities that are fed by multiple quantum dots. Strongly inhibited and ...

Anderson localizations and photonic band-tail states observed in compositionally disordered platform

Anderson localization in random structures is an intriguing physical phenomenon, for which experimental verifications are far behind theoretical predictions. We report the first experimental confirmations of photonic band-tail states and a complete transition of Anderson localization. An optically activated photonic crystal alloy platform enables the acquisition of extensive experimental data e...
